Full Version: DNTV on (K)Ubuntu Feisty-Fawn

First of all, I've only dabbled occasionally in Linux over the years, but when Windows finally pushed me over the edge last week, I made the jump to Linux and have now been _forced_ to tackle Linux configuration head-on - including getting my DNTV card working.

Out of the box, Ubuntu recognises the card - but IIUC - only as an analogue capture card. Hence it loads the Video4Linux modules that supposedly allow capture from the analogue input source. Not that I bothered trying this.

The first problem is getting the dvb modules to load on boot. I ran a depmod and then added the following modules to /etc/modules:
dvb-core, cx88-dvb, cx88-alsa
Once these are loaded you'll find that udev automatically creates /dev/dvb/adapter[].

The second problem - at least when trying to use MythTV - are the permissions on the /dev/dvb/adapter[] device tree.
I edited /etc/udev/rules.d/40-permissions.rules and changed:
SUBSYSTEM=="dvb", GROUP="video" ... to
SUBSYSTEM=="dvb", GROUP="mythtv", MODE="0660"

Now you can run the MythTV backend setup and choose a "DVB Adapter" and it'll show the DNTV card.

Hope this helps someone!
Regards,
Mark

Hi Mark,

It would help me if you could teach a newbie how to do it from scratch. I am a new user of Ubuntu and totally frustrated at understanding the lingo when I read howto instructions. I've used synaptic to install mythtv and xmltv but I have no idea how to access them and what to do with them. I read stuff about sql servers and databases but do not understand how to watch my darn tv card. It is a DNTV Live! DVB-T and it works under windows OK but trying out this ubuntu OS is so hard to get anything to actually go (like my printer). I sudo this and that and copy code into terminals and try to unpack some DVB drivers but I don't even know where to put them.

I need to start from scratch again I guess and I guess I need some sort of list of TV frequencies in my locality (Caloundra, Queensland, Australia) which I think XMLTV is supposed to be able to do...but how to tell it to do anything or even find some sort of thing to execute is driving me nuts.

Any help would be appreciated because if I don't get my TV on here soon, I will go back to windows where things work for me but I did not really want microsoft to win that easily and I would love to do without them and enter the world of freedom.

Cheers,

Zzirf

Hey Z, I can't help you too much on the Linux front, but use this site (DBA Reception Locator) if you need a list of frequences. Throw in your postcode and it'll find your frequency. Caloundra is 4551/4575?

It hasn't worked for me. When you open the mythtv backend, then select "2. Capture cards", what designation has been given to your tinyUSB? When you select that entry, what does it show next to Card Type: ?

I don't suppose you had any luck getting the remote working?
