Hey Guys,

As advised, tomorrows XMLTV guides (1st November) will be the last I will be generating. I will delete all of the caches tonight to ensure that everything is generated fresh tomorrow, so hopefully there will be at least 4 or 5 days of good data to keep you going until other sources become available.

I subscribed to IceTV today, and on first impressions, the data looks pretty good. IceTV contacted me last week and offered me a 12 month subscription with a 25% discount, and they have also extended that offer to anyone else who was using my guides and wants to switch over, just send me an email to dvbowners@jrobbo.com for details on how to apply. In the interests of full disclosure, IceTV have also offered to give me an extra months free subscription for anyone who takes up this offer, just want to make sure you guys know what I get out of this. If this is of some use to you, that's great. Please note that this offer is only open until the end of November

Anyway, I wish you guys the best of success in securing a new, reliable source of EPG data, whichever source you use. FWIW, the whole reason I began generating the EPG guides several years ago was to help out the guys on this forum, and only on this forum, i've never advertised it or talked about it anywhere else but here. Unfortunately, word spread and it got the point where several thousand people were downloading new guides every day, and that's the barrage of not-so-nice emails came from when things went wrong.

All the best

Cheers

John

John, your guides have been fantastic, and really helped along the way. I can't begin to think of the amount of work you must have put in. I think (and hope) you may get a good few 'extra' months of subscription from old users of your guides that go to IceTV.

When I saw your note about the guides stopping soon, I also looked into IceTV. I was concerned because my WebScheduler capture PC is not internet connected, but there is a guide on the IceTV site that helps in setting up a download on the internet connected PC, which can be copied across to the WS machine as an xml file.

So if anyone else has this concern, IceTV does and will work with WebScheduler, whether it is internet connected or not.

I guess you are about to get a deluge of email once from tomorrow - the place I found out about the guides was the wiki - which is currently down...

(Again, many thanks)

That 'social condition' was recognised in Forrest Gump, when he decided after a couple of years, he decided to stop running which he started doing for his own benefit. One of his self imposed hangers-on said in a 'you owe us' way, "what are we supposed to do now?".

Thanks for all your efforts. It was really appreciated. I will send you an email to get the IceGuide details.

John, many many thanks for your tireless effort in keeping a free EPG service available so long and is something that is just part of the normal broadcast just about everywhere except Oz. I have IceTV on my BW but the program descriptions are a bit glib by my taste compared to the free sources in many respects but I guess in time they will improve. My showbiz wishes "break a leg!" and all the best... biggrin.gif

Many thanks John,

Your guides have been appreciated by us all. Thank you for your efforts.

For those looking for an alternative - stay tuned! Uryan and I have been working behind the scenes to come up with a possible replacement.

Thanks for the good times John.

B*gger it ! I'd subscribed to IceTV a week or two ago when I heard you were winding down. I wonder if IceTV'd do a "retro" for me ? Can't hurt to ask.

Jrobbo, you're a legend. I used your guides and was extremely happy with them.

Thanks for all the effort, and I apologise for all of people that take everything for granted and gave you a hard time.

Thanks again mate.

Guys,

Thanks so much for all of the kind words and support. To be honest, I expected to cop a bit of flack over my decision, but true to form, everyone from this forum has been really nice about it. Of course, when everyone else who uses the guides, but aren't members here, figure out that the guides aren't working over the next few days, things will be different :-)

Daniel from IceTV asked me to add to my post that the IceTV offer is only open until the end of November. He did tell me that originally, and I forgot to mention it.

Cheers guys

John

G'day John.

I'm a long time lurker and have rarely posted in the past. I felt it necessary to post now and pass on my thanks to you personally for your wonderful EPG I have been rather casually downloading from you daily over the last year or more. They have really completed Webscheduler as a fantastic open product.

I understand your reasons for now discontinuing its production and wish you all the best.

PS. I love what you have done with your Apollo Theatre!!

Regards,

Mike.

Thanks for all your hard work, JRobbo.
It's a pity there's always an ungrateful minority who make life hard on people who do something for the greater good.

Just wanted to add my HUGE thanks too, John. You've provided us all with an invaluable service, it's a shame it had to end this way. I'm heading to IceTV too, I think. I'll send you that email about the discount - seems like you've well and truly earnt any free months! Regards, and thanks again,
Miriam
