12 Years is pretty awesome. I would love to find the time to bring Hip into the 21st century but unfortunately the necessities of life have intervened.

There are a number of reasons why it may not be but you need to narrow it down it a little:

1) The IR: Download the CheckScanCode app from here http://www.byremote.com.au/downloads/download.asp?SID=18 and see what scan codes the command is being interpreted as and that it returns the SAME code for each press. Let me know what the code is...if it is special key like a Media Key or Ctrl, Alt or Shift key you will have to use the Low Level Keys input on the Application Properties screen itself.
2) The Command: Before you assign the key to anything useful, point it to something that you KNOW works (even check it with a different key). Sometimes when you think the IR is not working it is the action that is nto working.

Sorry...but the MCE part will not work under 64-bit windows I am afraid.

thanks for the compliment. I am not working on it at the moment. It sort of all has to be rewritten from scratch to bring it into the 64-bit world we now live in which will take some time (something I don't have a lot of right now).

My website got hacked via a SQL Injection attack and I had to pull it and I have not had any time to re-write the system to get it back online again (it will be a job for the holidays).

If anyone is looking for downloads send me a message....they are all still there just hiding for the moment.

The web server should be running whenever Hip is running (it has to be minimized to the icon tray for it to work).

If that is not the case, let me know. I have not used the Web server for ages.

Some keys cannot be typed int the keyboard editor. Just copy the text as it is and place it in the edit box.

The short answer is that the MCE drivers are not compatible with the 64bit version of Windows. I believe it is something to do with permissions because apparently some other developers have managed to get this to work by pumping the commands through a Service. No one here has been able to get it to work though.

It will require someone with the access to the source code to create a new Win7-compatible driver before it will be usable again....maybe it has already been done but I cannot find anything.

It turns to gray by itself? Can you make sure you do not have an Command anywhere is the system or schedule that disables Hip?

The correct shortcut is {BKSP}. I am not sure why it does not work in this program. Does it work in other programs (like NotePad for example?)

I am not sure what your problem is, you can test keystrokes using the CheckScanCode program http://www.byremote.com.au/downloads/download.asp?SID=18

What you do is you add it to the list of applications in HIP, and you can then test the commands that are being sent.

If you still have no success, then show us some examples of commands that are working just in case it is a syntax question.

This is usually a limitation of the remote. Some remotes do only send 1 command, and others send 1 IR Command for the press and a different one when held. If the led on the remote continues to flash when you hold down...you MAY be able to learn the held command if there is one by obscuring the IR when you first press it.

I do not have a boxee but I see that there is an alternative form of entry via http: http://developer.boxee.tv/Remote_Control_Interface

And so
UP: http://host:port/xbmcCmds/xbmcHttp?SendKey(270)
DOWN: http://host:port/xbmcCmds/xbmcHttp?SendKey(271)
LEFT: http://host:port/xbmcCmds/xbmcHttp?SendKey(272)
RIGHT: http://host:port/xbmcCmds/xbmcHttp?SendKey(273)

If you can get that working in a browser, then you will then need something like the Command-line HTTP Client tool (httpcmd.exe).

There may also be a solution using the PostMessage framework, but someone with a Boxee will have to work this out.

There are all sorts of problems with Win7 and the latest version of the MCE drivers for Hip, and so I would try to use whatever the OS decides to install by default before trying anything else.

As far as dedicated devices are concerned, none of them real cheap (although they have dropped in price quite a lot since I started this).

In order of quality:

IRTrans: http://www.irtrans.com/en/index.php (99 Euros for the USB Version)
USB-UIRT http://www.usbuirt.com (USD50 for the standard version)
Tira 2.2 http://www.home-electro.com (USD49 for the standard version) *Apparently the Tira Plugin I have written does not work with HIP and I do not have a recent version to test.

The IR Trans is particularly cool because it runs as a web server and so theoretically you could control any device from anywhere. All of these though will be able to control all sort of devices effortlessly.

Sounds like a nightmare! All of the configuration options for HIP are stored in files in the Hip program directory and if you want to zip your config files I can take a look to see what is wrong but it is difficult to know precisely what is wrong.

I might have to get my Tira out of retirement to see....

I personally cannot help you. Using the MCE device seems to be the source of a lot of problems.

Can you control ANYTHING with the MCE box? The emitters are extremely low power and it is necessary to put them as close as possible to the receivers on the device you want to control.

Other than that the only real solution is to get a device that is built for the purpose like IRTrans or Tira.

I will try and investigate and find a solution. I suspect it is a timing issue....if I create a test build would you mind testing it for me?

Plasmas are a comon cause of this problem. To test the theory...try moving it as far as away form the screen as you can to see if it works as expected. Because the Tira is a universal remote, it will try to act on ANY IR it receives whereas consumer devices only need ot be looking for particular signatures which is why this can be a problem.

Sounds like IR interference to me. This can come from a number of surprising sources including fluorescent lights and notebooks, but the most common in Home Theatre land is the Plasma screen. Try moving the receiver well away from the TV or any other device (even pointing it in the wrong direction).

The MCE driver will not install in the 64-bit version. There is a problem with permissions that means that the only it will work is through a service with elevated permissions which requires a substantial re-write. The other of this driver has long since stopped in being in cummunication and so I am sorry but you will be out of luck.

Hip is not great for fine mouse control and so you may be better finding a specific solution.

The MCE drivers are very hardware specific and the device is pretty lousy at learning from any remote other than ones that use the same Philips chipset and so they will either work or not.

There is no standard for IR commands and so it is unlikely to work. If you can find a Girder or LIRC plugin for the device then you may be in luck...otherwise it is unlikely.

It should be possoble to use Hip in the native Keyboard input mode, intercept a Volume key commands (via a Low-Level command) and get Hip to send an IR Command via the MCE output option. It is a little complicated: try and see if you can get it working in stages (first check you can receive keys and then see if you can send IR and then finally trap the specific command).
