I dunno about this, I think pound for pound its the best value program I have ever bought, and I am not really sure once the version 5 architecture came out that there is anything I could even ask for.

Personally I think v5 even without a great deal of updates is already worth its asking price.

I paid for v4 some ridiculous amount of time ago.. in fact I joined this forum BECAUSE of webscheduler.. This was around mid-2005 just before v3.. and I've had updates through to 5.0, and to be honest, it worked so well, after about 5.2, I didn't bother even looking at updates.

I've had a pet project to install mythtv for about as long as I've used web scheduler... I've bought new pc's, gigabytes of disk.. tried mythdora, knoppmyth, roll your own myth, on redhat, suse and recently mythbuntu... I've tried 0.20... 0.21... fixes tree's, trunks.. building my own mplayer etc... It just can't compete with WS on an old windows XP, using an Xbox Media Center to view the recorded mpgs...

Frankly, for the few $$ I spent on WS Pro, ( insignificant when compared to over three years of ICE-TV subscription costs, and the cost of the disk to save the recorded programs to... ), my only possible complaint would be that there wasn't a linux release of the PRO version..

Thanks for all your work Null.

BTW, looking forward to a linux release of tv-scheduler pro :-)

Are you kidding? This feature alone is the primary reason I haven't migrated to a myth
based system.

(The second reason is having to build a small PC to act as a myth frontend... I'm currently
happy with my XBOX Media Center)

PS. Myth is slowly catching up. I've heard that managing multiple streams from a multiplex
and recording consecutive programs with a single tuner are coming... But then, since Myth
has been at v0.2 for over 12 months, and really isn't moving... I'm not holding my breath...

Do you not want it?

I find it obscures program Titles and Descriptions which happen to fall behind it.

Not a real problem, just drops the visual appeal a notch. All you really need is maybe for
'current' programs (Ie, programs which would cross the 'now' line) to be in a slightly different
shade of blue, or maybe in bold text. Something very simple, although what I've just
described sounds like my friends 'mythtv' box...

I've dropped the line to 4% width so I can still see it in the side bar.

Cheers

Hi Null,

Its been a long time since I even thought about updating, the latest version is very nice..

* [added] "Show Path" to the path list items on the mains status page, this take you to the manage files page for this path

If you hover the mouse over the 'folder icon', the tool tip says 'Show in EPG'.. Probably not what was meant.

Also, is the yellow 'now' bar configurable? In other words, can I turn it off from the system config?

Thanks

I've just started using this tool to replace webscheduler on windows...

I've paid for webscheduler on windows, and I'de love it if I got the new v5 features on linux :-)

Anyway, is the source for the linux versions available? I'm really missing the 'merged into separate files'
feature, and want to re-implement it on linux.

For now, I'm using 'non-merged' but Its so inefficient on tuners that I find myself missing the start of
some programs.

Also, the zapdvb capture seems to write incorrect time codes (similar to how webscheduler with TS
format used to do) and the solution is to pipe the output through zapcvt -r.. I'm looking to code
that directly into the source...

Hello, Long time since I looked around here, but with the release of v5 of WS PRO I thought
I'd put an old feature request forward one more time.

The NowRunning.xml needs to be available as a fixed URL, which the WS Widget can retrieve using
a HTTP request.

I can then run the widget on my laptop, and have it 'fetch' the nowrunning data from the WS server
without fidding with drive mappings etc.

Version 5 has been released.

After upgrading to V5, MPG capture support is gone. Is this correct? or do I need a different muxer from
what I had that worked with v4?

EDIT: Its back. I had placed DNMPGMUX in my webscheduler\filters folder, and at some point cleaned it up
when upgrading to v5.. I've restored a backup to the newer \dvb webscheduler pro\filters folder, and its all
green now.

Thanks

I havent upgraded to 4.3.0.1 yet, but since the upgrade to 4.3.0.0 the webscheduler widget
has stopped working. The 'nowrunning.xml' file is no longer updated.

How do I turn in on again? I can't find a setting to enable it.

V 4.3.0.1 still no nowrunning.xml file..

I've set the [capture details path] setting, but this writes individual details files for each recording, which
doesn't work with the widget.

You can put in a request to Rob S who seems to be the owner of these forums. ATM We have this thread, and I guess you can also use the forums at sourceforge.
Firstly, we need to sort a few things out on the organisation side and also put in some sort of roadmap before taking requests for changes like this, otherwise the program will end up a complex, hodgepode, mess.

Too many chefs and not enough endians? maybe not...

QUOTE
Secondly, is it that bad having to type in a few numbers? (If yes then please explain why as it may help find a suitable replacement.) The reason the security ID was put in place was to stop an exploit that allowed a remote webpage to run arbitrary commands on your computer. Basically, by visiting a specially crafted website, it could take control of your computer. I actually had a proof-of-concept page that only took a few minutes to put together and could do basically what it wanted to your computer. Null_pointer put a lot of work into balancing the security and ease of use of the thing and it would be a shame to throw that away for no reason.

On this point, the "security" is weak and confusing at best.

1) The program restricts "dangerous' activities such as creating and editing tasks to "127.0.0.1" only.. Even using the hostname
address of the local machine doesn't work... It doesn't request a security ID anyway...
2) The program allows *anyone* to edit system settings, as long as they type in the security ID.
3) An application could easily OCR the "security id", as it is plain, unobscured text. On this point, webscheduler
does not apply any denial mechanism of when too many incorrect (or missing) guesses are made.
4) TASKS can be executed against recordings without needing a security ID, and pretty much any kind of
recording and scheduling task can be performed without security ID. Denial of Service through filling
someone's scheduler table is still quite easy..

Now, while I would prefer security over "security" any day, its necessary to build security at a lower level.

Build in the concept of a GUEST user, ie, the default user, and accept a 'login' to access 'system' pages.
Let the owner decide what tasks a GUEST can perform, and allow users to be created with appropriate
permissions. I'm happy for my kids to schedule tv shows, and even select tasks to run against their shows
but the 'system' icons should not even be visible to them.

In fact, I would prefer it if only the 'owner' or 'administrator' could see all schedules, and who created them.
Individuals should only see their own schedules, and if possible, have private recording folders.. If two users
wanted the same recording, well the software can already stream recordings to multiple locations, this is a
minor extension on this. (assuming different users are recording to different directories..)

On the security by location front, create IP/Subnet based ACLs. I would accept LOGINs from IP addresses in the
'acceptable' ACL, but only allow GUEST or NO access from other ip addresses. Personally, my laptop can VPN
into my local network and perform scheduling tasks.. but to make task changes, I have to remote-desktop
into the machine running the webscheduler. I don't really want to have to do that. It messes with the HTPC.

There is alot we can do with and about real security, the 'security id' feature is nothing but a PITA.

Cheers.

There is a config guild under the start menu, perhaps I should bring this up at install completion time so people can see it and use it at install time. It also needs updating I think so will put that on the todo list. Thanks for pointing this out.

Hi Null,

I like what you've done to the setup menu's. If you are thinking of making initial setup easier, look at
making a wizard which takes you through

- activation
- card selection
- channel discovery
- epg config (then download an epg)
- channel mapping
- capture settings (default type, capture directory, start/end padding etc)

Also, If I set an EPG auto add to use a specific capture path (other than auto-select) and that
path is full/unavailable, will it perform an auto-select? or will it fail? Ie, is the selected
capture path FIXED, or PREFERRED.

Hi All,

Looking at signal strength on the control panel, it is fluctuating up and down a lot, like from 80-100% in a cycle of every second or so. Signal quality remains at 95% though, and the onscreen picture doesn't show any degradation.

Thanks,
Paul

I have had similar symptoms, where the strength fluctuated between 70%-75% and 100% (but not in-between, it hover around
70-75% for a bit, jumped to 100% for a bit, jumped back). When it recorded, it was perfect. When it didn't, well it wasn't just
bad quality, it was no quality...

I bought an 18db signal attenuator, (for a princely sum of $2.80) and hooked it up in-line with my receiver, and the signal strength
dropped enough that the card now reports a consistent 100%.....

The incoming signal was too strong, saturating the signal processing circuits which effectively lost the plot and had to resync, thus
the fluctuations.

Interestingly I have three tuners, and the last (a dvico dual digital 4) is the only one to need the attenuator. The others get 95-98%
signal *all the time*.... so I have the attenuator in-line between the second and third tuners.

I have read somewhere the dvico dual digital 4 has a different chip-set and does some on-board amplification... which might explain
the need for signal attenuation.

If you use libavcodec rather than xvidenc (or the latest cvs version of xvidenc) then you can set threads=x to take advantage of smp.

Uryan,

Since I am using mencoder for encoding, (courtesy of paul_ahb's wonderful scripts) how do I go about using 'libavcodec'
for encoding divx material?

Where do I start?

it wont if you install it to a different dir, also you might want to pick a different port.

You would have to be careful about only installing one as a service.

You could use regedit to rename the v3 service, before installing v4... but
your PC may be unrecoverable if you get it wrong.

Run one as a service, and for the other, use 'Task Scheduler' and add a
schedule for 'When my Computer Starts' to run the other.

"Free" costs you nothing.
"FreeTV" meant for FTA sources.
"FreeTVScheduler" Freedom to schedule record anything you choose anytime without the need to action.

Go for it, maybe "OpenTVScheduler"

For OpenTV?

Maybe OpenScheduler, OpenPVR. (OpenPVR seems to exist, but the last correspondence on the mailing list is 28-4-2004.. I take that as
the date of demise..)

Also, Can I suggest the 'capture engine' not be confused with the 'scheduler'. Break the code into the following imaginary modules:

- Capture engine (pluggable BDA, V4L, V4L2, VLC, or even Analog capture)

- Encoding engine. Does nothing, maybe on-the-fly divx encoding, esp useful for analog capture. I have optus TV which I can
see as an analog source in MythTV. Webscheduler currently won't help me with that.

- Scheduling engine. (Schedule recordings, schedule XMLTV updates, schedule 'EPG AUTO ADD', even schedule 'post capture tasks'
which are either (a) uncoupled from their recording due to time contraints, or (cool.gif delayed due to thread limits.

- Data Engine. Manages back-end data sources including XMLTV, episode guides, watched episodes (to prevent recording
duplicates) managed recordings (to provide front ends with information about available recordings for transcoding,
task operations and streaming. Naturally each recorded show keeps the associated EPG information in the database
and is available to the front end when browsing. Also manages expiring of recordings.. maybe even differentiating between
watched and unwatched.

- Control Engine - Integrates scheduling, capturing, encoding, provides an API for interfaces including
EPG (soap/xml/etc) streaming HTTP/RTSP/etc (including transcoding where supported by the encoding engine)
Adds the ability to allocate a free card to an encoding engine and a stream provider for LIVE TV streaming
with limited timeshift (ie, keep a 30min ring buffer only, not full recording)

- Web Interface
- Tray Interface
- GUI Interface
- Front-End - Media browser/player with support for multiple display heads, multiple sound cards, possibly even remote controls. Supports using the
Control engine via tcp with support for bandwidth limiting (via transcoding) and Live TV w/ timeshifting.

A lot of this can be done using individual parts like VLC, WebScheduler, JTVlan and other things. Integration would be
key.

I'd say 'thats my 2c worth', but it reads like the front page of the mythtv web site :-(

Anything is possible, the question is would it be useful, most people capture using the same capture type thus this would be for most people a useless addition, the question is do enough people record mixed capture type captures to warrant the extra coding/testing that this would require? This is a big change so for now I can add it to the list of things to look into.

Thanks for the response,

For now, I'd be just as happy if they failed to merge because of 'incompatible' recording formats.

That would have no impact on users recording in only a single format, and, worst case, require an additional
tuner for the duration of the overlap.. (I'm making assumptions about how flexible the merging code is.)

Also, when the shows are auto added, the single 'added' shows have a 'delete' icon, but the merged shows have
an 'edit' icon next to each scheduled item. Why can't I edit un-merged items?

yes this is something to watch out for, because of the new device id system you will need to re-select your devices.
cool, it looks like setting the extra media type details has helped then.

Thanks for the feedback.

I noticed while playing around with schedules that use MPG, if two schedules using different recording
types are adjacent, both are recorded with the recording type of the first.

I remember this is an old problem, but with the new file splitting technology built into the v4 series,
can you create the multiple output streams as different file format? (As long as those formats
supported file splitting.. ie, mpg and ts).

What user does the capture tasks run under? I am positive it's running under some other user or something is going on. I created a .bat script which simply opens up a program (in this case gordian knot). When I run the bat script manually, the program looks normal as it was run under current logged in user. When I add it as capture task all the default settings are different and it doesn't appear to be running under the same user.

All tasks run from webscheduler run as the same user as webscheduler.

If you are running webscheduler as a service, open up the 'services' control panel
(start->run services.msc, or right click 'my computer' and select manage)

Locate the 'DVB WebScheduler' service, and open its properties.

Select the 'Logon' page, and by default it is set to 'system user'.

Select the box 'logon as user', and enter your username and password.

Restart webscheduler, and it should now be running as you.

Let us know how you go.

Yes for version 4.0 but older version I would un-install and then install this new version.

Also keep in mind this is the retail version and will need activation to be made fully functional.

Just beware that with the capture device changes, after the install all devices are now
unselected. You have to go to system->devices and re-add all devices.

(at least, I had to do this... ymmv).

@Null,

MPG support suddenly started working with this update. Thanx. :-)
(I dont have players or codec installed on my recording machine, and I only use the xbox media center for
playback of recorded media. until now, mpg written by WS was the only supported content I couldn't play.. )

As websheduler has now gone closed source in a commercial version of the project i would like to continue an open source version of the project in some form.

The source code for the previous version 4.0.14 is still under the gpl till the point and is available from this thread. I would like to continue to have an open source version of the project but it is not going to work if it is only me working on it, we could use your help and not all the tasks are going to be coding.

If the open source project is going to go ahead a few changes are going to be required.
1. We need to decide on a project name, websheduler should exist with the commercial version and it should be trademarked (do it if you have not yet null), to avoid confusion.
2. We need to setup somewhere to communicate and coordinate our work, If possible it would be nice to have a section in this forum, who is the owner?
3. We also need to decide where we are going to store the source code, sourceforge.net, code.google.com and berlios.de are good places to use.
4. In relation to 1, we will need to change all references to the new name of the project, there are probly also logo's which might need to be changed as well etc.
5. we should also discuss if we are going to keep or break compatibility with ws, this includes things like themes etc, there are a lot of things that are great with the code but some things i would like to rewrite like using packages.

Are there any features that you would like implemented in this open source version.
One thing I would like to work on is the ability to specify what capture engine you want, ether the current engine written by null, one written using videolan on windows. On the linux side it should be possible to set up scripts to use dvb-zap (the current method), tzap (it should be in most distributions), vlc, gst-launch, mplayer. If anyone wants a port to another os it should be straight forward to do, basically i want the ability to specify a long list of command line arguments to the capture engine in a way that makes it easy to just drop one in.

Are there any other features you want worked on this open source version?

There are probly a few other things that would be nice to have done, at the moment the source code is all in the same directory, it would be nice to have some refactoring done and have the code split into packages. It would also be nice to redesign the archatecture a little, the web interface and the capture engine are tightly bound together, it would be nice to have them more separate which if done right would make it possible to have several different front ends.

More flexible filename patterns (%s for subtitle for instance). Ability to specify '\'s and have subdirectories automatically created. Its an old one I've
always asked for.

Ability to have multiple capture paths (like the multiple filename patterns) and select the path per 'auto add item', or automatically
fail to an alternate path when one appears too full to hold a recording.

Skins.. I'm bored with blue, and as some pages are templates, some are static, some are XSLT and some are
generated internally, making a new skin at the moment requires alot of knowledge and some editing of the source.

Player.. or more specifically, embedded objects (quicktime, or mediaplayer) so while looking at a recorded file, you
can play it. with an option to make it full screen... with further options to automatically transcode it depending on
bandwidth and available codecs at the client side.

Scheduled Reboot. - I often need to reboot the machine, but must wait until recordings are complete. I would like to
hit a checkbox (or tick in the wstray menu) which will reboot the server when recording is idle.

WSTray improvements.. http://forums.dvbowners.com/index.php?showtopic=7574

Null asked a similar question some time ago, you could browse the requests people made back then, and
maybe take on a few that got missed... http://forums.dvbowners.com/index.php?showtopic=7371

As the web interface is tightly bound with the capture engine a gui would be a bit of work with what we currently have.
Are there any developers that know any of the rpc methods? I know RMI, Corba and socket programming. Does anyone have experience writing a web service or useing jini as these are more modern options. The ideal eventual goal is a well organised source code tree and really good set of public api's to make things like adding a gui much easier.

Do we have anyone with experience in software engineering? I would find it useful if someone with experience would help me with some designing.

Back to your idea, I have a bit of experience in building a gui in java useing awt and swing and building it is relatively easy but the harder part is connecting the application with ws.

Any more ideas?

Sorry, I thought you'd been around this forum long enough to spot a troll.. but I admit the call for a
gui on web scheduler was a pretty old one.

How about a windows GUI ?
